How did you discover Aveda? Whether you were walking through a store and fell in love with the aroma of cherry almond or a friend recommended damage remedy™ daily hair repair because they can’t live without it, there’s chance you may not know much about us.

1. What’s in a name
Pronounced ah-vay-der, our name means ‘all-knowledge’ in Sanskrit. Our founder, Horst Rechelbacher was heavily inspired by Ayurveda – the ancient healing art of India and other indigenous wisdoms that take a holistic approach to life and wellness, with a focus on cultivating balance.

2. Our HQ is… 
… located in Minnesota, just a few miles from Minneapolis. How did we end up here? Horst was in a car accident while visiting Minneapolis and decided to settle here. He was a hairdresser, set up a salon and the rest is history. Officially founded in 1978, we also have an offices in London and across Europe.

3. Can you guess our first product?
The first Aveda product ever created was clove shampoo. Legend has it that it was created in a sink or a bathtub. With changing regulations, the recipe may have changed slightly over time, but it remains an iconic favourite.

4. We love our planet
While we may not be perfect, we are striving to better every day. Take air control™ hair spray  for example – it has a net-zero impact on the Earth's climate. We fund renewable wind energy to offset the CO2 associated with the manufacturing, transportation and use of control force™ to help ensure it has a net-zero impact on the Earth's climate. Most of our offsets fund future wind energy over time.

5. We’ve got the secret to thicker-looking hair

6. Meet our Bee Squad
We have five colonies of honeybees at our Minnesota HQ – that’s over 100,000 bees! We're passionate about protecting and preserving their habitats and our National Wildlife Federation-certified wildlife habitat supports the bees with a 58-acre oasis that provides food, water, cover and places to raise young, and that uses sustainable landscaping and gardening practices: no pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or insecticides.
